?Skyfall? song review: Adele?s James Bond theme sticks to 007 cliches instead of reaching new heights
Adele's theme 'Skyfall' does a far better job at conforming to the form's cliches that it does pushing it to any thrilling new heights.
It's rich. It's sweeping. And it's definitely Bond-ian.
But is it catchy?
Adele's passionately anticipated new 007 theme for "Skyfall," which debuted Thursday evening on the singer's web site, has plenty of the franchise's essential elements. But, ultimately, it does a far better job at conforming to the form's cliches that it does pushing it to any thrilling new heights.
"Skyfall," co-written by Adele and frequent collaborator Paul Epsworth, employs the pricey power of a 77-piece orchestra, recorded at the esteemed Abby Road Studio. Their participation insures a depth of sound, and a lushness in arrangement, Bond theme fans will find familiar. More, Adele has the vocal heft we're used to in this hallowed world. In fact, she may own the biggest voice to grace this spy thriller realm since Dame Shirley Bassey, who has boomed through no fewer than three Bond themes over the last five decades. ("Goldfinger," "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Moonraker," specifically).
Daniel Craig stars as James Bond in 'Skyfall.'
Unfortunately, the song itself lands closer to the last, and least, of those campy beasts. It suffers from a similarly meandering melody and ponderous progression. The grandeur of its arrangement easily upstages the tune.
In other words, it's far from a killer 007 theme.
Even so, the luster of Adele's tone, and the bravura arc of her vocal, makes it enjoyable enough. And, fifty years down the line, isn't that all we really expect from a Bond product these days?

Hulk Hogan?s ex-wife Linda Hogan arrested for DUI, denies pro wrestler?s sex tape leak sparked her drinking
The reality TV star, 53, was pulled over for speeding around 1:30 a.m. and registered a blood alcohol of 0.084, barely a bleached blond hair over the legal limit, her lawyer told the Daily News.
Linda Hogan was released on $5,000 bail shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday.
Linda Hogan ?regrets? her DUI arrest in Malibu Thursday and vows it had nothing to do with her ex hubby?s new sex tape. The reality TV star, 53, was pulled over for speeding around 1:30 a.m. and registered a blood alcohol of 0.084, barely a bleached blond hair over the legal limit, her lawyer told the Daily News. The lawyer said she?d been hospitalized two days prior for an e coli infection and was on antibiotics, which exacerbated the effects of the champagne she drank at a jewelry event hours earlier.
?She regrets it. She?s a mom, so she?s embarrassed about it,? lawyer Raymond Rafool told The News. ?She?s just thankful it wasn?t worse and thankful nobody got hurt. The police were all very nice. It wasn?t a scene at all. It was anticlimactic.? He said his client, whose legal name is Linda Bollea, had maybe two glasses of bubbly before driving home to her west coast residence in Simi Valley.
